An Empire  for Slavery

An empire for slavery brings to light the institution of slavery in Texas. The author traces the development of the institution of slavery from the settlement of Anglo-Americans in Texas after the Civil War. In fact, the underlying factors that sustained and expanded slavery many years after the Civil War are discussed in detail. The institution of slavery in Texas is traced from the migration of Americans to Texas. With this migration the customs of Americans was brought and integrated in the region. In view of the above, it is essential to note that the institution of slavery significantly affected the policies and lifestyles of Texans. The author uses many evidence to support his thesis for example news paper, WPA Narratives, wills and civil war.

The main subjects in the book are the slaves, the Texans, and the Mexican officials as they were central in practice of slavery. Mexican officials were against the practice of slavery and wanted to abolish the institution. However, early Texans were in favor for the institution and deemed it necessary for the development of their economy. Because of this, after the Mexican Independence, Anglo settlers embarked on an uphill battle with the Mexican government so that slavery could be kept legal. Slavery in Texas is claimed to be one of the underlying factors in the Texas Revolution. In this manner, after the victory against Mexico, slave laws were instituted at every level by Texan officials followed by the importation of bondsmen into the state (Campbell, 1991). In 1836 Texas experience was a rapid expansion of  slavery because they needed a slave for labor, because Texas had a huge land space with rich black top soil, slavery in Texas played a significant role in the agriculture economy of Texas.

In the book, the argument on the negative practice of slavery is highlighted through the experiences slaves underwent. Slavery provided Texans with vast opportunities for free labor in agricultural lands. Conversely, high profitability was provided from the trade of slaves in the region. A fluid capital was therefore generated from this practice leading to the expansion of slavery to the West. The author utilizes hard evidence to support the notions in the book. Information from firsthand accounts, newspapers, letters, and census among others are used. The experiences of slaves in Texas are discussed in the book. Inclusive of this is the material conditions of the slaves, work routines, and slave communities. Additionally, the resistance of slaves to the chattel system and masters are discussed in detail. African slavery is also considered to have influenced the development of slavery in Texas. 

In An Empire for Slavery, the author traces the development of slavery in Texas and the impact this institution had to the state. Notably, slavery in Texas played a significant role in the agricultural economy of Texas. The slavery in Texas is also a reflection of slavery practices in other southern US states (Campbell, 1991). In fact, the author makes comparisons of slavery practices in Texas and Southern US states. Overall, the book is effective in providing information on the development of slavery in Texas. 

Fact: Just like other regions in the United States, slavery in Texas took an influential aspect in the region after the civil law. Slavery provided a base for the provision of free labor and also generated vast amounts of fluid capital. 

Interpretation: Texas could not have grown as it had before 1865 without the slaves’ contributions. Nevertheless, slavery was a curse to Texans, white and black alike.
