For this assignment, you will submit an annotated bibliography of at least eight sources (four primary and four secondary) for M5A1: Project 1: “Autobiographical” Essay.
First, read the description of project 1 due in Module 5.
As you compile the list of sources that you will consult for your “Autobiographical” essay, remember that historians use different types of resources in their work. The two broad categories are primary and secondary sources. In general terms, primary sources are those pieces of evidence that were created at the time period being studied by people directly involved, while secondary sources filter and synthesize events at a later date.
Unlike a traditional bibliography, an annotated bibliography explores the sources rather than merely referencing them. According to the staff of Cornell Library, an annotated bibliography should begin first with a proper citation, then: “a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. Include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, or (d) explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.” This should be done for each of your sources.
The Annotated Bibliography should be formatted and cited using eitherAPA or Chicago style. See below for information on finding sources and writing the Annotated Bibliography
If for example you decide to be a cobbler in Project 1 then include the sources that you used to learn about the cobbler’s trade. Please feel free to access colonial maps, journals, newspapers, diaries, photographs, or any other information you feel may be helpful from the Library of Congress’s “American Memory” website, the National Archives website, George Mason University’s website “History Matters”, Yale University’s “Avalon Project”, Special Collections at Duke University, or the website “Archiving Early America” as well as any museum or historical society website.
